Patagonia is a vast area in the south of South America. It is bordered by Chile and Argentina. It is well-known for its glaciers and fjords as well as the temperate rainforests. The land is surrounded oceans, including the Atlantic, Pacific, Beagle Channel, and Beagle Channel. A large portion of the area is under the jurisdiction of both countries.
Patagonia's name derives its name from the Patagonian tribe, a native tribe. Rodrigo de Isla was the first European to reach the vast Patagonian plain. He visited the region in 1535. Although the Spanish crown retained de jure control over the area, it wasn't keen to colonize it. There were numerous indigenous communities that lived in the region before the 1715 boundary treaty. The Tehuelches were among these. Some indigenous groups survived the European invasion while others died. In the 18th century, several coastal settlements were built.

There are two major regions in the province. Argentine Patagonia, or Patagonia del Sur, comprises 90% of the territory, with the remaining 10% being shared by Chile. The regions have distinct climates and ecological zones, with the Argentine side featuring deserts and grasslands whereas the Chilean side is more temperate with the aptly named Los Lagos region. The Andes Mountains are the dividing line between these two regions.
The Patagonia area houses Cerro Chalten, also known by Monte Fitz Roy. It is the highest mountain in the world. The area is visited by many tourists each year. It is a popular destination for skiers, trekkers, and nature lovers. Other noteworthy landmarks include San Francisco's volcanic cone and Magallanes Glacier. Winter visitors should prepare for heavy snowfall.
Patagonia also has natural beauty. Many environmental activist campaigns have been launched to preserve the region in the past. They ranged from green tourism campaigns in the 1990s, to today's. It is no surprise that the region has been an early leader in the Living Wage movement.
